What to Wear for Family Photos (From a Mom Who Gets It)
If family photos stress you out before they even begin, you’re not alone.
One of the most common messages I get starts with “I’m so excited… but I have no idea what we should wear.” And honestly, that makes so much sense. You’re juggling schedules, naps, school, work, and life. Adding outfits for everyone on top of that can feel like too much.
Here’s what I want you to know first. Your photos are not about outfits. They’re about connection. They’re about the way your kids lean into you, the way you laugh together, and the way this season feels right now.
When it comes to clothing, simple always wins. Soft neutrals, gentle textures, and pieces that feel like you will photograph beautifully and stand the test of time. Think cream, tan, soft browns, muted blues, warm greens. These tones keep the focus where it belongs.
Comfort matters more than matching. If your kids can move, sit, and play comfortably, your photos will feel natural. If you feel confident in what you’re wearing, it will show in every image.
I always suggest starting with one outfit you love, usually mom’s, and building from there. You don’t need everyone in the same color. Coordinated is better than matching.
